As we enter the holiday season, we want to share a few tips to help keep your pets safe and avoid any unexpected visits to the ER. The holidays bring joy but also potential risks for our furry friends. Here are some helpful precautions to keep your pet safe:

1. Avoid Dietary Mishaps:  Winter Holiday Hazards for Pets - Veterinary Partner - VIN

• No fatty foods: Rich, fatty foods can cause gastrointestinal (GI) issues and even pancreatitis.

• No chocolate or caffeine: Dark chocolate, in particular, poses a risk for GI, cardiac, and neurological issues.

• No onions/garlic: These foods can lead to hemolytic anemia, a serious blood disorder.

• No grapes/raisins: Even small amounts can lead to kidney failure in pets.

• Keep the trash secured: Bones from food or wooden skewers left in accessible trash or on counters can cause serious damage to your pet's GI system.

2. Holiday Decor Safety:

• Keep an eye on Christmas ornaments: Cats are often attracted to shiny, stringy items such as tinsel, which can cause severe GI blockages if ingested.

• Secure electrical cords: Young animals especially are more likely to chew on electrical cords.

• Pick up discarded ribbons from gift wrapping: Like with tinsel, cats may attempt to ingest ribbons if left on the floor leading to potentially fatal obstructions.

 3. Managing Pet Interactions During Gatherings:

• When bringing pets together from different households, supervise their interactions closely to prevent any possible conflicts.  Never leave them unsupervised.

Wishing you and your pets a wonderful and safe holiday season!

As always, please call us or contact us here if you have questions or concerns.

Warm regards,
